John Coalter Bates (August 26, 1842-February 4, 1919) served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army from January to April 1906.

He fought in the American Civil War with the U.S. 11th Infantry Regiment, reaching the temporary rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He later served on the Indian Frontier for several years, and commanded a division in the Philippines in the early stages of the Philippine-American War.
