John Casablancas

Encyclopedia : J : JO : JOH : John Casablancas

John Casablancas (born December 22, 1942 in Manhattan, New York) is the founder and former Chairman of the Elite Model Agency Group, and founder of the world's largest modelling school. He is the father of Julian Casablancas.

He was born to Spanish parents from Sabadell, Catalonia and grew up in the United States, Mexico, and Europe. He attended the exclusive private Swiss school, Institut Le Rosey.

Casablancas worked in a variety of jobs including managing the marketing division of the Coca-Cola franchise in the northeastern part of Brazil. He opened his first modelling agency in Paris, France and two years later created Elite Model Management. He reportedly left Elite Modeling in 2000, and now heads the John Casablancas Career Center, a modeling and acting school, which has franchises in Bolivia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Italy, and Indonesia, as well as in the United States -- in Florida, New York, New Mexico, Washington, and Arizona. As owner of this company, he used to state the advantages of the contacts he had with the Elite Modeling agency.

Controversy

Casablancas became notorious for raiding his modeling agency's stable of young girls, some as young as 14. A New York critic wrote that it would be more appropriate for him to be dating Stephanie Seymour's mother, instead of Stephanie herself.
