John Tavares (ice hockey player)

John Tavares (born September 20, 1990, in Oakville, Ontario), is a Canadian amateur ice hockey player. He is currently playing with the Oshawa Generals team in the Ontario Hockey League. Tavares, is the nephew of John Tavares of the NLL Buffalo Bandits.
The normal minimum age for the OHL is 16, but John Tavares was granted 'exceptional player' status, allowing him to enter the league early. The Oshawa Generals picked John first overall in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection. He played his first OHL game on September 23, 2005, just 3 days after his 15th birthday. John recorded his first OHL point in that game against the Kingston Frontenacs. He will be eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2009.
Tavares was awarded the CHL Rookie of the Year Award, and the OHL Rookie of the Year for the 2005-06 OHL season. There were no applications to grant exceptional status to any players for the upcoming 2006 OHL Priority Selection draft. David Branch, president of the Canadian Hockey League stated "Tavares set the bar very high'.
