John Waterhouse of Halifax is known as a pioneering 19th century photographer, and is widely credited with the invention in 1858 of a system of interchangeable lens diaphragms, brass strips with pre-cut apertures, inserted through a slot in the lens barrel, that came to be known as Waterhouse stops or Waterhouse diaphragmsRudolf Kingslake, A History of the Photographic Lens, London: Academic Press, 1989..
