John Witherspoon (born January 27, 1942) is an African-American comedy actor best known for his roles in Boomerang (1992), Friday (1995) and the 1990s WB sitcom The Wayans Bros. John was born in Detroit, Michigan and has also been known as Johnny Witherspoon and Detroit John. He has combined a career as a stand-up comic with guest appearances on television. Most of his roles in movies have been as a character actor. Can be seen in Hitman Sammy Sam's song "Step Daddy" as Stepdaddy #1.
His recent roles include Robert "Granddad" Freeman in the animated television show The Boondocks.
