The Jos Plateau is a plateau region covering 7770 km² having an average altitude of 1280 metres, with its highest point at 2010 metres, which is the only region of temperate climate of Nigeria. It gives the name of the State in which it is found.

History

In the 19th century, the Jos Plateau was a refuge for populations, especially Christians, that wanted to escape the Jihad of the Fula people led by Usman dan Fodio in the north of Nigeria. After the British colonization, it became one of the most importan tourist destinations of Nigeria, but this touristic activity was impeded in early 21th century by new fightings between the Christians and Muslims.

Geology

The Jos Plateau is of granitic nature, with some elevations of vulcanic origin containing tin. Important rivers are Kaduna, Gongola, Hadejia and Yobe, which have their source in this place..
