Joseph Polchinski (b. 1954) is a physicist working on string theory. He is a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara and a permanent member of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara. Among contributions to theoretical physics, D-branes are his best known.
Joe Polchinski is also the author of two volumes of the famous textbook called simply "String Theory" although he calls it "Joe's Big Book of String".
It is rumored that Joe is an excellent poker player (better than Herman Verlinde, anyway). A self-proclaimed "big bettor," he is especially good at bluffing.
