Juana Azurduy de Padilla was a Bolivian guerilla leader in the early 19th century. She and her husband formed an army after Bolivia declared itself independent in 1809. By 1826, when Spain withdrew, she had been able to carve out a republiqueta (little republic) for herself with this army. Juana Azurduy de Padilla International Airport is named after her.
