Encyclopedia : J : JU : JUD : Judeţ
A judeţ is an administrative division in Romania and was also used for some time in Moldova. It is commonly translated to English as "county".
Its name is derived from Romanian "jude" (< Latin "judicis"), which was a function in mediaeval Romania, with administrative and judicial powers, roughly meaning judge and mayor.
