Kırşehir

Encyclopedia : K : KR : KRE : Kırşehir

Kırşehir, formerly Macissus (also spelled Mocissus and Mokissus) and Justinianopolis, is a city in Turkey with a population of 85,000. It is the capital of Kırşehir Province.

The beginnings of Kırşehir reach back to the Hittites. What the city was called at that time is unknown. The Romans was called the city Macissus and after the city was rebuilt by Byzantine Emperor Justinian (527-565), it was renamed Justinianopolis, which name was retained until the end of Byzantine rule. The Turks took the city in 1071 and bestowed the current name. In Turkish, "Kir Sehri" means "steppe city".

In the 19th century, Kırşehir was attached the Sanjak of Ankara. In the year 1921 Kırşehir was created capital of its own province. Kemal Atatürk visited the city twice (in 1921 and 1931). Kırşehir is well-known for its tolerance: Alevites and Sunnis peacefully coexist.
