K13XD

K13XD (branded as KXD) Channel 13 is the CBS affiliate in Fairbanks, Alaska. It signed on the air on August 7, 1996 as the area's sixth television station, four months after longtime CBS station KTVF dropped the network in favor of NBC. Prior to the station's launch, sister station KFXF temporarily broadcast only a few CBS shows along with those from Fox, such as The Young and the Restless, 60 Minutes, Late Show with David Letterman, and Walker, Texas Ranger. The addition of KXD also meant that Fairbanks would finally have a station for each of the four main networks: KATN (ABC), KFXF (Fox), KTVF (NBC), and KXD (CBS), along with KJNP (TBN) and KUAC (PBS). KXD and KFXF are both owned by Tanana Valley Television.

Though licensed as a low-power class A station (despite still having repeater-style call letters), K13XD has been operating as a full-power station (3.47 kW at 277 meters) since March 2004 under special temporary authority from the FCC. TVTV sought special temporary authority while the FCC considers changes to its duopoly rule that would help resolve TVTV's request of a permanent waiver of that rule. Meanwhile, there are several other mutually exclusive applications for full-power stations on channel 13 that await resolution by the FCC. Its transmitter is located in Fairbanks.
