K55EH is an low-power translator television station in Phoenix, Arizona. It provides over-the-air service on analog channel 55 to north Phoenix from its transmitter on Shaw Butte, rebroadcasting KAZT-TV to an area blocked by terrain from KAZT-CA, the main AZ-TV rebroadcaster in the area. K55EH is owned by Londen Media Group of Phoenix.
History
Sunburst Broadcasting Corp. applied for a permit to construct a low-power television station on channel 55 on August 22, 1980. The station was intended to rebroadcast the signal of KSTS 48 San Jose, California, which was at the time preparing to offer subscription broadcast services. (The call letters STS are an acronym for Subscription Television Service.) This station would be the local provider of subscription broadcast TV. However, the FCC didn't grant an original construction permit until August 27, 1985, but by that time, KSTS had abandoned plans to build a subscription television service. The new television station to be constructed was to have the callsign K55EH, broadcasting from atop what is now the US Bank building at 1st Avenue and Adams Street in downtown Phoenix with a 100 Watt signal. In April 1987, Sunburst Broadcasting Corp. sold the construction permit to KUSK LLC, who moved the transmitter location to Shaw Butte in north Phoenix and increased the power dramatically, to 13.5 kW. After several CP extensions, the station was licensed in December 1990, retransmitting Prescott station KUSK (now KAZT-TV). In June 1994, KUSK sold the station to Henry Sauro, who kept the same programming on the station. K55EH was reduced to its present power in 1999 when the antenna was changed from direction to omnidirectional.
In November 2000, Sauro agreed to sell the station to interests representing Azteca America. Most, if not all, of the KUSK group stations were to be included in the same deal, but it was called off. The Londen Media Group then bought K55EH in April 2002, along with the KUSK properties.
Looking ahead
As an out-of-core (above channel 51) station in a major metropolitan area, it is likely that K55EH will need to change channels sometime before 2009, however, Londen Media Group has announced no plans as of yet to do so. It is likely that any channel change will accompany a request to build digital TV facilities.External links
