The Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology is an institute of higher learning in Daedeok Science Town, Daejeon, Korea.
Established in 1981 through the amalgamation of Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS) with Korea Institute of Science and Balh Technology (KIST) by the KAIST Law (Law No. 3778; new foundation of the university for the establishment of the bachelor's program), it has currently 7,000 students and 800 teaching staff.
It is the only university controlled by the Ministry of Science and Technology instead of the Ministry of Education. The Institute's purpose is to provide highly qualified scientists and engineers, to perform mid- to long-term basic and applied research, and to provide a research platform for other institutions. It is generally regarded among Koreans as the best tech-school in the country, and it routinely recruits gifted sophomores of South Korean science high schools.
According to evaluation by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), “KAIST, the best university in Korea, is considered to be comparable to that of the top 10% of U.S universities.” (“KAIST Facts,” 2002).
The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.
