KALB-TV Newschannel 5 is a full power television station -- as an NBC network affiliate, the station serves the entire Alexandria, Louisiana metropolitan area. Its transmitter is located near Forest Hill, Louisiana.
Technical Information
This station is licensed to broadcast on VHF channel 5 with an estimated Effective Radiated Power of 100 kilowatts and in high definition on UHF channel 35 with an ERP of only 37 kilowatts under a Special Temporary Authority but has filed for a construction permit to increase power to about 1,000 kilowatts. KALB is owned and operated by Media General -- headquartered in Richmond, Virginia.
History
KALB began its broadcasting operation in 1954 -- not long after that the station began carrying ABC and CBS as secondary and third-party affilates and would continue to do so throughout the 1960s. Through most of its history, the station was owned by the famous Roy H. Park Communications, Inc. In 1997, Park sold KALB to its current owner, Media General -- along with 12 other stations.
KALB launched its digital signal in 2002.
