KBKS-FM better known as Kiss 106.1 is a radio station in the Seattle area that plays current popular (Top 40 Mainstream) music. The CBS Corporation outlet broadcasts at 106.1 MHz with a ERP of 55 kW and is licensed to Tacoma, Washington.
History
Prior to its flip to their current format in 1997, the station was best known for their two previous formats: Country as KRPM (during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s) and Rhythmic Adult Contemporary in 1996, the latter where the KBKS calls and Kiss 106.1 moniker were a holdover from.
At first KBKS' direction leaned more towards Modern Rock as a way to counter KUBE's Rhythmic Top 40 direction, but since then it has broaden up its direction by embracing more R&B/Hip-Hop tracks in the hopes to dent KUBE's dominant ratings in the Seattle Top 40 wars. Despite the changes KBKS has yet to topple KUBE, especially in mornings, where its married morning team of Jackie & Bender is still challenging KUBE's top-rated morning star The T Man. Ironically KBKS tried to lure T-Man away on several occaisions, but he turned them down.
