Indie 103.1 is a small alternative music radio station serving parts of the Los Angeles, California metropolitan area via two transmitters: KDLD Santa Monica and KDLE Newport Beach. Both are class A signals that operate at 103.1 MHz in the FM band. A number of famous musicians host their own shows on the station, including Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Dicky Barrett, Rob Zombie, and members of The Crystal Method. Guest hosts have included Henry Rollins and Dave Navarro. The format of the station is based heavily in the alternative rock genre.

The station has recently come under fire from some listeners for the firing of Dicky Barrett, host of the Mighty Morning Show, on March 21, 2006. Those listeners are calling for a boycott of all Indie 103.1 sponsors and advertisers.

The station began as a collaboration between Entravision Communications, a company better known for its Spanish-language outlets, and Clear Channel Communications, the single largest owner of radio stations in the United States. Clear Channel primarily handled advertising on the station, but because the organization already owned the maximum number of stations in the Los Angeles market allowed by Federal Communications Commission regulations, the arrangement was terminated in March 2005.

Prior to the switch to Indie, 103.1 operated with a format of contemporary dance hits known as "KDL" (owned and operated by Entravision Communications). 103.1 previously had three dance formats. Rave inspired "MARS-FM" (call letters KSRF/KOCM) from late 1991 through late 1992. Club D.J. Swedish Egil accepted a rare opportunity to develop his music director skills and visionary style when he left KROQ in 1991 to join L.A.'s new MARS-FM, along with fellow KROQ alum Freddie Snakeskin who became MARS-FM's program director. The station became well-known for its role in introducing America to the techno/rave music phenomenon where Egil was responsible for "picking the hits" and breaking new artists. Egil and his leased time format were dumped by owners seeking a more mainstream station. 103.1 became a jazz format station, followed by another format change to "CD-103.1", an adult contemporary format. Swedish Egil returned in 1996 and launched "GROOVE RADIO 103.1FM", using the call letters KACD/KBCD, fulfilling Egil's dream of expanding his syndicated weekly 3-hour "GROOVE RADIO" program, previously heard in Los Angeles as part of the nighttime RENEGADE RADIO show on KWIZ, into the first full-time 24/7 format in America devoted to new dance music and to the art of the DJ. GROOVE RADIO 103.1 gained an unprecedented notoriety for its innovative programming and groundbreaking music format and became the catalyst for dance music's exposure across the entire states. Groove Radio 103.1FM had a morning drive time show hosted by Jim "The Poorman" Trenton, a L.A. radio icon and original host of the radio show "Loveline" with Dr. Drew Pinsky. In 1997 Egil was forced out of the station as owners wanted a more commercial property. The station was renamed "Groove 103" and continued with a more hit-oriented dance/electronica format for a year. In 1998, the station flipped formats to the Adult Alternative format "Channel 103.1," programmed by Nicole Sandler. It later flipped to Spanish before turning to the English-language KDL dance format in 2003.

The 103.1 frequencies in LA/OC operated as two separate stations prior to the 1990s, KSRF/Santa Monica and KOCM/Newport Beach. Both signals carried a B/EZ (beautiful music/easy listening) format in the 60s/70s and AC (adult contemporary) in the 80s but targeted for each specific beach community (103.1 Santa Monica was known as K-Surf and 103.1 Newport Beach was known as K-Ocean).

Trivia

Indie currently has a reggae show hosted by "Native Wayne" (Wayne Jobson). Native Wayne is a native Jamaican of European ethnicity.
