Encyclopedia : K : KD : KDO : KDON

KDON is a Rhythmic Top 40 station based in Salinas, California. The Clear Channel Communications outlet broadcasts at 102.5 MHz with an ERP of 15 kW.

History

KDON started out as a Mainstream Top 40 in the early 1980s but would evolve to Rhythmic Top 40 by 1988 and since then has remained a dominant powerhouse in the Monterey/Salinas/Santa Cruz radio market. When KDON debuted, no disk jockeys spoke on the air. The station featured back to back music. This may have been a gimmick at the time as the fledgling station fought to gain a foothold in the market. But, this "jockless" format changed over the years. In the early nineties, Mancow Muller hosted a live & local morning show there. KDON was also the first station to feature UFO Phil, a world-famous radio character who got his start on the Dr. Maimes morning show in 1997. This radio radio station was KSBW FM and format was Middle Of Road and Beautiful Music hybrid.
