KEZI is a television station in Eugene, Oregon, USA. It is an affiliate of the American Broadcasting Company. The station broadcasts its analog signal on VHF channel 9, and its digital signal on UHF channel 44 from its transmitter located in Eugene.
KEZI-TV is owned by Eugene-Based Chambers Communications Corp., which also owns ABC Affiliates in Medford (KDRV) and Klamath Falls (KDKF). It serves the Eugene-Springfield Designated Television Market, ranked #121 of the 210 US TV markets ranked by size, with nearly 230,000 television households. An early station logo featured the call letters stacked vertically with the slogan "EZ on the I."
KEZI was launched originally by a group of investors under the name "Liberty Communications." Carolyn Chambers was one of the original investors in Liberty and after gradually buying out the other parties, emerged as the sole owner of the Station. The Parent company was renamed Chambers Communications in the mid 1980s. Carolyn Chambers' son Scott is currently the company's President.
The station's newscasts are known as '9 News.' The station dropped the "Eyewitness News" brand in favor reinforcing its channel position after it moved onto cable channel 9 on Eugene's primary cable system. Previously, KEZI's signal was carried on cable channel 10.
In the early 1990s, Chambers purchased ABC affiliates KDRV-TV in Medford and KDKF-TV in Klamath Falls. Both stations produce local newscasts that enjoy long-standing ratings dominance in their communities. Chambers has tried to leverage that success to improve KEZI's news ratings with only marginal success.
Chambers Communications recently announced it won FCC bidding for the right to build a new, full-power television station in Bend, Oregon. The company has not announced whether this new station, referred to as 'Channel 51' until the station's call letters are established, will affiliate with the ABC Television Network, although given Chambers' long-standing relationship with ABC, it is widely expected the new station will become an ABC affiliate. Chambers says it plans to produce local newscasts on the station and has already begun advertising for personnel to staff the operation. Presently, KEZI's signal is rebroadcast and carried on cable in the Bend market as is the signal of Portland-based ABC affiliate KATU-TV. Bend, OR is ranked #196 out of 210 US markets ranked by size, but is one of the country's fastest-growing areas.
