History

KGNU was created in 1975 by the students in a class at the Boulder Free School called "A Desperate Attempt to Start a Radio Station, Part II.". KGNU went on the air at 88.5 FM with a 1300 W transmitter on the 21st of May 1977. In the summer of 2004, KGNU acquired a second frequency, 1390 AM in Denver, the first time that a community radio station expanded into a major radio market by purchasing a station.
