History

On December 10, 1959, 106.9 FM went on the air as KPUP. In July 1960, the call letters were changed to KHIP and it became an all-jazz station. In August 1962, the station again changed call letters to KMPX, for MultiPleX, when it began broadcasting multiplex stereo. The station evolved to a "middle of the road" format in the mid-1960s.

By 1967, KMPX 106.9 adopted an album-oriented rock format, along with its sister station KPPC in Pasadena. In 1969 both stations were sold by the Crosby-Pacific Broadcasting Company to National Science Network, Inc.

In March 1972, KMPX switched to a big-band/nostalgia format.

In September 1978, the station was sold to Family Stations Inc. and it became the new home of Family Radio's flagship Christian radio station KEAR, after its former 97.3 station was sold to CBS Inc..

In 2005, Viacom, before its split from CBS Corporation (which, incidentally, is a successor to the old CBS, Inc.), was in the process of acquiring KOVR, a CBS-affiliated TV station in Sacramento, California. In order to meet FCC ownership limitations, its subsidiary Infinity Broadcasting needed to sell off AM station KFRC, which could also be heard there. Infinity purchased KEAR from Family Stations after selling the AM station to the religious broadcaster.

Family Radio's programming was being simulcast on KEAR 106.9 and KFRC 610 until October 17, 2005, when Infinity took over the FM station and it became KIFR. It is likely that the call letters were named after the transaction between Infinity and Family Radio. Infinity Broadcasting became CBS Radio shortly thereafter.

On October 25, 2005, the Free FM talk radio format was launched, and KIFR began carrying the Tom Leykis and John and Jeff shows. Beginning in January 2006, KIFR programming has included the popular Adam Carolla Radio Show, a syndicated program airing on stations across the country. Host Adam Carolla, formerly of the syndicated love and sex advice program "Loveline," is joined on-air by Dave Damashek, Teresa Strasser, and a panel of producers including Jimmy Kimmel. Additional programming on KIFR ranges from the underground hit "Sex With Emily" airing Saturday late nights and the "Irene McGee Show," hosted by the former MTV "Real World" cast member-turned-media graduate student, Irene. Billed as the larger, louder half of comedy magician team Penn and Teller, Penn Jillette hosts Penn Radio airing from 11pm to midnight weekdays.

KIFR and the Free FM format also includes a strong online presence via the 106.9 Free FM website (1069freefm.com). An emphasis on podcasting, online streaming, and interactive features provide a bridge between the traditional talk radio format and the "on-demand" features of developing new media.

One aspect of the KIFR Free FM programming that has been the topic of listener conversation is the inclusion of paid programming or "infomercial-style" programs. An example is Res-Q Health Line, which formerly ran Sundays at 6 a.m. This is, however, common practice for talk stations nationwide, with regards to weekend programming, and should not be considered controversial in the case of KIFR.
