"KQLZ", "Pirate Radio 100.3" is an internet based radio station that pays tribute to a former United States, Los Angeles, California area FM radio station.
History
Before Pirate Radio 100.3 began, 100.3 was the home of "KIQQ-FM" known on the air as "K-LITE".Contrary to its moniker, the original KQLZ wasn't an actual pirate radio station--it was fully licensed by the United States government agency FCC.
The original KQLZ was a FM radio station owned by Westwood One that started on March 17, 1989.
Pirate Radio started as a "Rock 40" station playing rock and heavy metal mixed with up beat Pop music, some alternative music in a manner similar of that to Top 40 stations. At first their range of music was eclectic, and the station prodly proclaimed they played everything from Madonna to Metallica to Milli Vanilli. An hour of music on Pirate Radio in the spring of 1989 could include hip hop from ToneLoc, electronic music from Depeche Mode, a pop music ballad by Martika, a Pop rock song by the The Bangles, satirical Punk rock by the Dead Milkmen all mixed with music from such rock and heavy metal acts as Iron Maiden, Billy Squier and Winger.
The station was programed by Scott Shannon, who was famous within the radio business for his work on Z100 in New York City in the 1980s. Mr. Shannon left his New York City job to move to Los Angeles and compete against top rated station KIIS-FM "KISS-FM" as well as Dance music-leaning Top 40 KPWR "Power 106".
By the summer of 1989, the station emphasized more on hard rock and heavy metal music (mostly metal in the more pop oriented Glam Metal genre) putting it more in competition with metal station KNAC and rock station KLOS.
The station dropped the "Pirate Radio" name on Friday, December 25, 1992 and switched to a new format that was a hybrid of rock and alternative music. The station from this point forward was known as simply "100.3FM" with the slogan "Southern California's Cutting Edge".
"100.3FM" existed till Friday, April 2, 1993 when it became KXEZ "EZ 100.3", an Easy listening station.
100.3 FM Los Angeles is currently the home of 100.3 The Beat.
"KQLZ", "Pirate Radio 100.3" returned via the internet as a tribute site in April, 1999. In 2001 an internet radio station was started. The format of the station emphasizes heavy metal music on played on the original FM radio station from the summer of 1989 till 1991.
