The American radio station KSAN, better known as 107.7 The Bone, is a classic rock station licensed to San Mateo, USA, a suburb of San Francisco.
The callsign KSAN has appeared on three unrelated radio stations and one related TV station since its first use in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1950s. This entry is about the FM station known to Baby Boomers in the 1960s.
The KSAN callsign was used on 94.9 FM after the former classical station KSFR was purchased by Metromedia in 1966. From 1969 until 1980, KSAN was a highly influential freeform progressive rock radio station, founded by Tom Donahue. In 1980, they switched to a country music format. In the mid 1990s, the KSAN callsign swapped frequencies with KYLD, then on 107.7. It was then that KSAN dropped country and picked up a classic rock format to go with their new frequency. Since the demise of rival station KSJO, the station has adopted an active rock format. They play bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, and Metallica in addition to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC.
