KSBI 52 is an independent station in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It is owned by Family Broadcasting Group of Oklahoma, a locally owned and operated company. KSBI's tagline is "Family Television for Oklahoma". KSBI's owner Family Broadcasting Group of Oklahoma, also owns America One affiliate KXOC-LP 41.

Translators

KSBI-TV broadcasts across the state of Oklahoma through the following translators: KSBI is Oklahoma's second statewide television network following Oklahoma's PBS network, OETA.

History

KSBI went on air in 1989, and was originally a religious/independent station. KSBI-TV's original owner was Locke Supply Corporation. In 2003, KSBI was bought by Family Broadcasting Group, a Oklahoma City-based company headed by local television personalities Brady Brus and Brenda Bennett, who are siblings. With the station's new ownership, the station had a makeover it its programming lineup adding shows like A Different World, Saved by the Bell, The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, In the Heat of the Night and The A-Team. In early 2004, KSBI began a local morning news program "Hello Oklahoma" hosted by Brenda Bennett and Scott Coppenbarger. Coppenbarger left as co-host of "Hello Oklahoma" a few months later and the show was then co-hosted by Dino Lalli, whom like Bennett and Brus has a history in the Oklahoma City television market. Lalli previously worked as a film critic for KOCO-TV in the '80s and '90s. "Hello Oklahoma" aired its final broadcast in December 2005. KSBI formerly aired nightly newscasts from CNN Headline News but has since stopped running the newscasts.

Censorship

KSBI's programming practies are a little unusual from all other broadcast networks and especially independent stations as KSBI censors some material not deemed "family-friendly". Examples include: certain KSBI programs which feature some mild adult language would have the language bleeped out. Another example is when KSBI aired CNN Headline News, the station chose not to air a story on an HIV scare in the porn industry that occurred in May 2004. This station has on several occasions edited out portions of stories that do not fit into their "family- friendly" motto including but not limited to stories reguarding Harry Potter and articles involving health concerns that deal with an apparent not so friendly issue. KSBI does air violent programs such as A-Team and racy programs such as Magnum P.I.

KSBI across Oklahoma

KSBI, unlike other television stations in the Oklahoma City area airs its programming statewide. KSBI has translators across Oklahoma including in the Tulsa area. KSBI can be seen as far south as Wichita Falls, Texas, and as far north as Wichita, Kansas.

News, Sports and Weather

KSBI began live weather updates at the end of each hour in December of 2003 with station president and former KWTV weekend meteorologist Brady Brus as the chief meteorologist. Meteorologist Brandon Chambers has since taken over responsibility for the weather updates. KSBI has a "StateCam Network" which is a series of cameras across the state showing weather conditions which has proven to be very useful during severe weather. Mr. Chambers was covering severe weather and caught a tornado in the El Reno area in April 2006. Brady Brus was not involved in this coverage at least over the air. KSBI's Genesis Live weather system allows the station's meteorologists to telestrate weather info so viewers can understand weather information better and also allows weather information such as temperatures to update automatically when new information is available.

KSBI-TV has also forayed into sports by broadcasting local non-professional sports including high school basketball and football games. KSBI also is a Jefferson Pilot sports affiliate airing football and basketball games from the Southeastern Conference (SEC). KSBI has also aired games from the Kansas City Royals via RSTN, the Royals Sports Television Network during the 2004 season. The Royals 2005 season aired on sister station KXOC 41.

KSBI will be the latest station in Oklahoma City to air local news. While KSBI has aired some local breaking news stories and aired a local morning program Hello Oklahoma which ran from May 2004 to December 2005, KSBI-TV has never completely done regular local news coverage.

KSBI has plans to launch a local newscast, but unknown reasons have prevented the newscast to premiere several times. The newscast was to have premiered on January 23, 2006. It was then pushed back to February 1, 2006 but didn't premiere then. Ads for the newscast are still running periodically on KSBI but no exact date on the newscasts launch has been released as of yet.
