KTBN-TV
Encyclopedia : K : KT : KTB : KTBN-TV
KTBN (Channel 40) is the Santa Ana, California-licensed flagship television station of the Trinity Broadcasting Network, a religious broadcaster. The station is based out of the TBN network headquarters in near-by Tustin.
Channel 40 first signed-on the air on January 5, 1967 as KLXA-TV, one of the Los Angeles area's first Spanish-language stations. Paul Crouch, founder of TBN, took over operations of the station in 1973 and purchased the station outright in 1974. Trinity Broadcasting continued to use the KLXA call letters until November 1977, when the station officially became KTBN-TV.
Today, it serves the entire Los Angeles metropolitan area with a full powered signal, with low-powered satellite stations carrying the signal to other areas in Southern California (such as Palm Springs, Bakersfield, and Santa Barbara). With the station being available on cable systems throughout Southern California, KTBN is not carried on either Dish Network nor DirecTV's Locals package at TBN's request; instead the national feed is carried, as both the network and KTBN carry the same identical programming schedule.
Digital services
This station's digital signal, like most other TBN-owned stations, carries five different TBN-run networks: the local TBN channel (simulcasting the analog station) on 40.1, The Church Channel on 40.2, JCTV on 40.3, Enlace USA on 40.4, and Smile of a Child on 40.5.TBN has also notified the ATSC that it intends to use 75 as the major channel number on all of its full-power O&O stations in the future, in order to be consistent nationwide.[link] This is possible because of virtual channels, which allow any digital station to use any channel number from 1 to 99, regardless of which one they actually transmit on. Channels 70 to 83 are no longer used for TV broadcasting, and 84 to 99 never were, freeing those numbers to be used in this manner.
