KWWF or "UPN 22" is a television station licensed to Waterloo, Iowa. KWWF broadcasts on UHF channel 22 and is the affiliate of the UPN television network for the Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Dubuque, Iowa and Iowa City market. Its transmitter is located in Independence, Iowa.
History
KWWF signed on in 2003 with a format of infomercials, home shopping and reruns that were in the public domain. It then began rebroadcasting religious programs from LeSEA Broadcasting.
Equity Broadcasting bought the station in the summer of 2004 and quickly made it a general entertainment station. UPN programming began at the start of the 2004-05 television season and cable systems throughout the market began to add KWWF.
Operations and programming
While KWWF has a transmitter and sales office in Waterloo, the master control is actually in Little Rock, Arkansas. Equity Broadcasting transmits the signal to the transmitter and cable systems via satellite. KWWF's current signal can only be seen over the air within approximately 25 miles from Waterloo. In addition to its own programming, KWWF airs CBS Sports programming that is not cleared by local CBS affiliate KGAN-TV due to KGAN airing Big Ten Conference football and basketball or the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon.
CW and My Network TV
KWKB-TV will become the Cedar Rapids-Waterloo affiliate of The CW Television Network, a new television network owned by Time Warner and CBS Corporation which will premiere in September 2006 after the end of UPN and The WB. KWKB will also carry My Network TV, another new network offered to former UPN and WB affiliates.Without either The CW or My Network TV available in the market, KWWF must choose whether it will go independent, or use Equity Broadcasting's own Retro Television Network to fill the gaps left by the end of UPN programming. The station may also choose to affiliate with other networks, such as Univision or ImaginAsian Television.
