KZON, "101.5 Free FM", is a talk/rock station based in Phoenix, Arizona. The CBS Radio outlet operates at 101.5MHz with an ERP of 100kW.
History
In the 1980s the station was better known as KMXX (Mix 101.5). By 1992 it would switch to Triple-A as "The Zone", a moniker of which they would carry throughout its incarnations of Modern Rock, Modern Adult Top 40, Adult Top 40 and back to Modern Rock in 2000. On December 23, 2005, it was officially announced the KZON would be flipping to CBS Radio's Free FM format, featuring mostly nationally-syndicated hot talk shows like Tom Leykis. The station switched to the format, which also contains rock music during overnights and weekends, on January 3, 2006.KZON HD2
On May 1, 2006, CBS Radio announced that once KZON's HD Radio equipment is placed on the air later in the year, there will be a simulcast of heritage Los Angeles Modern Rock (and sister station) KROQ on its HD2 subchannel, although no commercials will be aired on the subchannel. [link]
