Kampgrounds of America (KOA) is a franchise chain of about 500 North American campgrounds based in Billings, Montana USA serving both tent campers and recreational vehicles.
History
KOA was founded by David Drum, a businessman from Billings, Montana, who in 1962 opened a campground on US 10 in time for the Seattle World's Fair along the Yellowstone River. In 1963 he began the franchise. By 1969 there were 262 franchises. By 1972, there were over 600 franchises, by 1982 there were over 900. Since then the number of franchises has declined.
