Kane is the mastermind behind the nefarious Brotherhood of Nod from Westwood Studios' Command & Conquer series of computer games, a benchmark in the real-time strategy genre of computer games. Little is known about him; many of his followers draw the connection between him and the biblical figure of Cain, which Kane does not go out of his way to confirm or deny.

History

Some place him to be hundreds of years old, in holding with the tradition of equating him with Cain—indeed, as he does not seem to age, this is entirely possible. Some other Biblical allusions to Kane's nature exist: in ', a coffin bearing the name Abel, along with the story of Cain and Abel written in Hebrew, is discovered. Kane also uses names like Jacob and Caine as aliases. Nod's stealth tank prototype is called the "Ezekiel's Wheel" after the manner of angels witnessed by Ezekiel, and the name "Nod" can be seen as alluding to Cain's state of banishment after his murder of Abel. In addition, in the Soviet outro of ', one of Kane's followers cites the very passage of the Bible describing how Cain settled in the Land of Nod; and, more importantly, the player's superior in the first few missions of Command & Conquer is a man named Seth, claiming to be Kane's right-hand man. Seth is later shot by Kane after ordering a strike on the United States; his body is preserved and can be seen as a "trophy" in the temple of Nod in . "We have waited centuries for this moment. The rivers will flow with the blood of those who oppose us."

This quote from Kane refers to a Global Net Interpol file #GEN 4:16. This reference however, is also biblical and leads us to the early days of the creation of Earth and mankind. It leads us to the 4th chapter of Genesis.

Kane also appears as a Nod agent acting as an advisor to Joseph Stalin during the Soviet invasion of Europe in Command & Conquer: Red Alert.

Though at times he appears as a serene prophet and cunning strategist, Kane is prone to violent outbursts, and is quick to remove underlings who disappoint him. At his direction, the Brotherhood of Nod began researching the strange substance Tiberium, arguing that it would bring about a new age of peace. His actions led the Brotherhood to gain a near monopoly on the world's supply of Tiberium as Nod technologies for harvesting Tiberium were the only viable method of extracting the mineral deposits, giving them enormous amounts of capital in a relatively short period of time. Kane himself is thought to have invented the technology, which is frequently referred to as the "Technology of Peace" by his many followers.

This period, which would increasingly come to be known as the First Tiberium War, was marked by the Brotherhood preaching to many of the third world nations to throw off their shackles of slavery under the first world countries. Many would sign up for Nod's utopian vision of peace and prosperity, blind to the implications of Nod's mantra "Peace through Power". For his actions, Kane rose quickly to the top of GDI's most wanted list.

The end of the war saw a GDI strike force frantically laying siege to Kane's temple in Sarajevo. Reports of Kane's demise are inconsistent; some say he was buried underneath rubble when the temple started to fall apart. Other, more poetic sources, state that the GDI ion cannon, firing upon the main temple complex, killed Kane—indeed, a security video substantiates this story. In it, Kane is seen embracing the light of the ion beam, perhaps believing it to be the light of God.

Kane's followers always believed that he lived in death and were vindicated when he rose again in , to lead Nod again and start a new war with GDI. He started Nod's Tiberium weapons research anew, focusing their work into the development of a world-altering missile. The missile's launch was foiled by another GDI assault, and Kane was defeated again. It is worth noting that in the ending for the Nod forces, Kane is seen to glow and disappear, as if ascending in a transfiguration. It has been mistakenly assumed that CABAL had cloned Kane at the end of Firestorm; however if one were to notice that upon closer observation, the face plate and scars are still on his face and head. One may assume that if he were cloned, his damage from Tiberian Dawn (Facial Plate, Burns) would be gone. One may also realise CABAL stands for Computer Assisted Biologically Augmented Lifeform; meaning Kane and all the other humans in this scene are part of CABAL's system at this time. Therefore, CABAL is not cloning Kane.
