Encyclopedia : K : KA : KAR : Kariba

Kariba is a town in Mashonaland West province, Zimbabwe, located close to the Kariba Dam at the northwestern end of Lake Kariba, near the Zambian border. According to the 1982 Population Census, the town had a population of 12,357.

Kariba is a center of the Zimbabwean tourist industry in the Lake Kariba vicinity, offering various hotel accommodations, casinos, and restaurants to visiting tourists.

The town was originally constructed to house worked on the dam, while fishing is now an important industry. It has two main neghbourhoods: Mahombekombe, the poorer lakeshore district, and Kariba Heights, the wealthier inland suburb and home to the Operation Noah monument. The town also has a crocodile farm and a disused airport.
