Karl Nobiling

Encyclopedia : K : KA : KAR : Karl Nobiling

Dr. Karl Eduard Nobiling (April 10, 1848 - September 10, 1878) was a German anarchist. Born in the Gummersbach district of western Germany, Nobiling studied philosophy and became politically radicalized during this time. He had some minor contact with members of the Social Democratic Party.

In Berlin on June 2, 1878, Nobiling shot and wounded Kaiser Wilhelm I in a failed assassination attempt. Nobiling then shot himself in the head, finally succumbing to his injuries in September 1878. His attempt to murder Wilhelm came less than one month after a similar attempt by Max Hödel.

Chancellor Otto von Bismarck used the actions of Nobiling and Hödel as a pretext to implement the Anti-Socialist Law in October 1878.
