Karyolysis
Encyclopedia : K : KA : KAR : Karyolysis
A feature of cells undergoing necrosis, or cell death caused by irreversible cell damage. During necrosis, the nucleus first condenses into chromatin in a process called pyknosis. Next, the chromatin is degraded by enzymes (DNAses) in a step called karyolysis, resulting in karyorrhexis. Microscopically, this degradation is evident by diminishing of basophilia in the nucleus.
