Katherine River
Encyclopedia : K : KA : KAT : Katherine River
A river in the Northern Territory. Its headwaters are in Nitmiluk National Park, and it is a tributary of the Daly River.
The first white explorer to find this river was John McDouall Stuart who found the river in 1862. He named the river Katherine after the second daughter of John Chambers. Chambers was one of the expedition's sponsors.
In late January, 1998, floods from Cyclone Les raised the level of the river by more than 20 metres and flooded a large part of Katherine town. There were also floods on 6 April 2006 which caused a state of emergency to be declared. The river peaked at a height of just below 19 metres (at the Katherine bridge on the Stuart Highway) during the flood. [link]
The only town on this river is Katherine.
