Keeled scales

Encyclopedia : K : KE : KEE : Keeled scales

Keeled scales refer to scales (on snakes, at least) that, rather than being smooth, have a ridge down the center. Species with keeled scales are often dull-looking rather than shiny. The keels may serve to aide in camouflage, to help grip during locomotion, or as a noise-making tool (as in the saw-scaled viper).
