Kennedy (surname unknown) is a fictional character in the American television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She is played by Iyari Limon. She is also known as Ken.

Biography

At 19, Kennedy was one of the first three Potential Slayers to arrive in Sunnydale, and the oldest. She was born to a wealthy New York family and attended an exclusive all-girls prep boarding school prior to moving to California. The short, dark-haired, olive-skinned Kennedy is apparently of mixed race, having a Caucasian father and Hispanic mother, with an older half-sister from her father's previous marriage. A lesbian, Kennedy aggressively pursues a relationship with Willow — whose longtime lover, Tara, was murdered at the end of season 6. This state of affairs produces unexpected consequences in the episode "The Killer in Me". Eventually, Kennedy and Willow become lovers and remain so through the end of the series (This is presumably the reason that Kennedy was established to be 19, since it might be deemed inappropriate for Willow to have a relationship with a high-school-age girl.) Kennedy fights alongside the other "potentials" and Buffy at the final battle with the uber-vampires in the series finale, in which she becomes a Slayer. In Season 5 of Angel, a year after the end of Buffy, mention is made that Kennedy and Willow continue to be a couple and are now living in Brazil together.

Notes and trivia

Kennedy witnessed her Watcher's murder at the hands of the Bringers. The fact that she knew about the Watchers before being Chosen indicates that she was approached by them at some point during her teenage years, unlike Kendra, who was raised by her Watcher from infancy, and Buffy and Faith, neither of whom learned about the Watchers until after they were Chosen.
Kennedy is not considered to be a popular character in the Buffyverse, with many fans feeling that she forced her way into a relationship with Willow (who, according to fandom belief, was not given sufficient time to grieve over the loss of Tara) too quickly; others profess their dislike of Kennedy because they consider her to be arrogant, pushy, bossy, overly sure of her slaying abilities (despite her relative lack of experience through most of the seventh season) and vehement in her open criticism of Buffy's leadership and slaying methods on at least two occasions, in the episodes "Get It Done" and "Empty Places").
