Encyclopedia : K : KH : KHA : Khatanga (town)

Khatanga (Russian: Хатанга; population 3,450 as of the 2002 census) is a town in Taymyria, Russia, located on the Khatanga River, south of the Arctic Ocean (N72*, E102*) at an elevation of 98 feet (29.87 m) above sea level. Khatanga is sometimes visited by Western sightseers touring the surrounding natural wilderness in Siberia. Amenities in Khatanga include an airport, a hotel, a natural history museum, and weather reporting stations. Khatanga Airport's (ICAO code UOHH) runway 6/24 has a concrete surface and measures 8858x157 feet (2,700 x 47.85 m). One of its uses is as a diversion airport if a twin-engine airliner experiences engine problems while flying over Siberia; however the airport is only equipped for landings during good weather.
