Kigezi District once covered what is now Kabale District, Kisoro mountain range and Mbarara Its terraced fields are what give this part of Uganda its distinctive character. Kigezi counties were
Rukiga, South East of the Kabale District, borders the Ankole Districts, originally known as Kajara county. There was a large area of swamp, which has been dried out to provide more pastureland to cattle and goats. Paul Ngologoza’s book Kigezi and Its People provides detailed information about the Bakiga people, their traditions and history.
Ndorwa, South East of the Kabale District, where Kabale town is still located. Lake Bunyonyi straddled this county and Rubanda.
Rubanda, Central county of the Kabale District and was surrounded by Ndorwa, Kinkizi, Bufumbira, Rukiga and Ruzumbura. North East of this county is Lake Edward, known locally as Rwitanzigye.
Kinkizi, North West of the Kabale District it shares its borders with Dep Rep Congo, Bufumbira to its South, Rukiga to its East an Ruzumbura to its North. This was formed by amalgamating Kayonza, Kinkizi, of Kinkisi and Rwanga.
Bufumbira, South West of the Kabale District – shares its borders with Dep Rep Congo, Rwanda, Rubanda to its East, Kinkizi to its North. Its sub counties are Bukimbiri, Lake Mutanda, Lake Mutehe.
Ruzumbura, most Northerly county of the district. Ihimba Hot Springs.
