Kilmaine

Encyclopedia : K : KI : KIL : Kilmaine

Kilmaine (in Irish, Cill Mheáin) is a village in County Mayo, Ireland.

"Kilmaine", derived from the Irish language 'Cill Mheán', means The Middle Church – 'Cill' is the word used in the Irish language for a church, and 'meán' is the Irish word for middle.

By international standards Kilmaine could hardly be accurately described as a town. In Ireland, it would be described as a village, with its population of less than two hundred. The hinterland is entirely rural, made up of farms and scattered houses. The nearest town is Ballinrobe, and the closest small city is Galway, less than twenty kilometers away.

One of the most interesting historical incidents is that which took place between two rival landlords during the 18th Century- Brown (eventually Lord Kilmaine) and Miller. Genealogical records for Kilmaine (Church of Ireland, Roman Catholic, Civil, Gravestone Inscriptions, etc)are available at the South Mayo Family Research Centre in Ballinrobe six miles west of Kilmaine.
