Controversies
Like her character, Zimmer is outspoken. She is a staunch defender of her work, and the soap genre in general, although she has been known to be critical of some of her storylines.Zimmer was involved in two "controversies" reported in the soap press in 2005.
- The first came when Guiding Light, faced with declining ratings and a need to reduce production costs, approached the cast about taking an across-the-board pay cut. Zimmer opposed the pay cut, stating that she was still in a contract and expected the terms to be honored until the contract concluded. The producers ultimately did not force the issue and Zimmer remained on the show at her designated salary. (Press reports indicate Zimmer's contract was renegotiated in 2006; she and the show appear to have come to an agreement.)
- The second controversy involved her son Jake Weary, who had portrayed a teenage character on As The World Turns. Producers of As The World Turns decided to have the character, Luke Synder, identify himself as gay. At about the same time, Weary indicated he would be leaving his role as Luke. Press reports questioned whether Weary or Zimmer were homophobic; Zimmer made a statement in the soap press that the content of the story was not the reason Weary was leaving; he had signed on for a recurring role with limited airtime, but was being used far more often, and wanted more time to concentrate on school and sports.
Awards
Zimmer has won four Daytime Emmy awards, including the 2006 honor, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on Guiding Light.External links
