Kindergarten Cop

Encyclopedia : K : KI : KIN : Kindergarten Cop

Kindergarten Cop (1990) is a film directed by Ivan Reitman and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger stars as John Kimble, a tough loner police detective, who goes after drug dealer Cullen Crisp (Richard Tyson), before he can get to his ex-wife and son. Pamela Reed plays his partner Phoebe O'Hara, a teacher-turned-cop. Linda Hunt is the diminutive Miss Schlowski, the school principal. Carroll Baker plays Cullen's mother, Eleanor, and Penelope Ann Miller plays Joyce, the 2nd grade teacher who becomes Kimble's love interest.

Plot

Kimble and O'Hara go undercover in Astoria to find the ex-wife and son of drug dealer Cullen Crisp, who is under investigation for murder. Since their appearance is not known to them (the last picture of the son, 'Cullen jr.', is actually more than five years old), the idea is that O'Hara will act as a substitute teacher of the Kindergarten class that his son is in, whilst Kimble tracks down the identity of the mother.

Unfortunately, O'Hara falls ill at the last moment, so Kimble takes the teacher's job, much to the suspicion of the school principal. Despite having no teaching experience - and thus facing a lot of stress initially - Kimble develops a real talent and shows his soft side by working with a class of 5 and 6-year old kids. He also falls in love with one of the female teachers named Joyce, who turns out to be Crisp's ex-wife Rachel. Her son Dominic - 'Cullen jr.' - also happens to be in Kimble's class!

Due to the machinations of his mother, Crisp is released and - along with his mother - arrives at the school. He causes a fire, during which he abducts his son. In a final shootout, he wounds Kimble but is then killed by him. His mother shoots Kimble, seriously wounding him, but is then knocked out by O'Hara.

The movie ends with Kimble making his most important decision: to remain a kindergarten teacher, and to marry Rachel.
