King George V DLR station
Encyclopedia : K : KI : KIN : King George V DLR station
King George V DLR station is a station on the Docklands Light Railway which opened in December 2005 and named for King George V Dock, nearby. It is temporarily the terminus of the King George V branch. From 2009, the line will be extended to Woolwich Arsenal [link]. Trains run Westbound only, to Bank in the City of London.
The station is in the London Borough of Newham and is located in Travelcard Zone 3.
Location
Prior to December 2005, Docklands Light Railway trains would arrive at Canning Town and would only be able to continue in a South-Easterly direction towards Royal Victoria. In December 2005, however, the new King George V branch was opened and trains can now continue south: they cross under the Lower Lea Crossing, travel along Silvertown Way before reaching North Woolwich Road (A1020). The train passes through West Silvertown DLR and Pontoon Dock DLR, makes a sharp northeasterly turn to arrive at London City Airport DLR and continues behind Newland Street and Brixham Street to arrive adjacent to Pier Road in the area of North Woolwich where the station is situated. The station, rarely for a Docklands Light Railway station, is situated at street level. The station has direct pedestrian links to the Woolwich Free Ferry and bus terminal at North Woolwich. It is also a five-minute walk away from North Woolwich Silverlink station, which will eventually be closed to allow the DLR to take over running of the Stratford–Canning Town branch of the Silverlink line for its Stratford International extension [link].Construction
As of December 2005, King George V is fully completed and operational. Construction work continues around the station as the Docklands Light Railway is being extended to Woolwich Arsenal in 2009.Train frequency
Trains run every 10 minutes to Bank in the City of London. Journey time is 9 minutes to Canning Town to interchange with the Beckton branch of the DLR, 14 minutes to Poplar to interchange with the Stratford and Lewisham branches of the DLR and 24 minutes to Bank in the City of London.External Links
