Kirby's Dream Land 2

Encyclopedia : K : KI : KIR : Kirby's Dream Land 2

Kirby's Dream Land 2 (星のカービィ2 - Kirby of the Stars 2 in Japan) was a video game released for the Game Boy in 1995. This continued the adventures of Kirby from Kirby's Adventure (NES, 1993), and added new friends for him to team up with: Rick the hamster, Coo the owl, and Kine the fish.

Story

Kirby lives in the rainbow islands of Dream Land. The rainbows that connect the islands have been stolen by the evil Dark Matter! Dark Matter has possessed King Dedede and wants to turn Dream Land into a dark world. With the help of three friends, Kirby sets out to save Dream Land.

Gameplay

Kirby's Dream Land 2 is a platform game. Kirby has to run, jump, swim, and fly through levels while inhaling, swallowing, and exhaling enemies, taking their abilities this way.

Abilities

Kirby can fight enemies several ways, the most common being inhaling an enemy and exhaling it out at another. Kirby can do so with special blocks as well. Kirby can also use special abilities on his enemies. If he is swimming, Kirby can shoot a jet of bubbles at an enemy. If there is no other option, Kirby can inflate himself up with air and hit an enemy with a gust of wind.

If Kirby finds that he has to get across a great gap, he can inflate himself with air and fly across. But while flying, Kirby can't inhale enemies like when he's running.

Islands

The game has seven islands. Each island consists of 3 to 7 levels, several mini-bosses, and a main boss.

The islands are:

  1. Grass Land (Boss- Whispy Woods)
  2. Big Forest (Boss- Nruff and Nelly)
  3. Ripple Field (Boss- Sweet Stuff)
  4. Ice Berg (Boss- Ice Dragon)
  5. Red Canyon (Boss- Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright)
  6. Cloudy Park (Boss- Kracko)
  7. Dark Castle (Boss- King Dedede)
Each island has a rainbow drop. Each rainbow drop can only be accessed by breaking blocks that require a certain ability to destroy. If the player has collected all seven rainbow drops, after fighting the usual final boss, King Dedede, he battles Dark Matter using the Rainbow Sword.

Friends

New to Kirby's Dream Land 2 are Kirby's three friends. Through the game, Kirby can ride Rick the hamster, Coo the owl, and Kine the fish.

Riding on friends has it's advantages and disadvantages. With Rick, the player can run faster on land and maintain traction on slippery surfaces, but Rick can't fly or swim very well. Coo can fly fast (and against wind), but can't swim well either. Kine can't fly or run very fast, but he can swim fast and against currents under water, and allows Kirby to inhale underwater.

Whenever Kirby teams up with his friends, he can use special abilities in new ways. For example, when Kirby gains a parasol while riding Rick, the hamster will spin and balance the umbrella and Kirby on its nose.

In short cut-scenes before entering new worlds, the player learns how Kirby meets his new friends. In the cut-scene before World 7, Kirby decides to ride Rick over Coo or Kine. We see here that Kine becomes jealous of Rick because he is Kirby's favorite.

Special abilities

Kirby can inhale and swallow certain enemies so that he can gain their abilities. If Kirby is with a friend while he has an ability, he uses it in a different way.

Trivia

Kirby's Dream Land 2 was one of a number of games released that had additional Super Game Boy support, namely a custom color scheme, a special game border, and a few added sound effects.

It was slated to be remade for the Game Boy Color as Kirby's Dream Land 2 DX, but, like , it was canceled.
