Kirby's Dream Land 2 (星のカービィ2 - Kirby of the Stars 2 in Japan) was a video game released for the Game Boy in 1995. This continued the adventures of Kirby from Kirby's Adventure (NES, 1993), and added new friends for him to team up with: Rick the hamster, Coo the owl, and Kine the fish.
Story
Kirby lives in the rainbow islands of Dream Land. The rainbows that connect the islands have been stolen by the evil Dark Matter! Dark Matter has possessed King Dedede and wants to turn Dream Land into a dark world. With the help of three friends, Kirby sets out to save Dream Land.Gameplay
Kirby's Dream Land 2 is a platform game. Kirby has to run, jump, swim, and fly through levels while inhaling, swallowing, and exhaling enemies, taking their abilities this way.Abilities
Kirby can fight enemies several ways, the most common being inhaling an enemy and exhaling it out at another. Kirby can do so with special blocks as well. Kirby can also use special abilities on his enemies. If he is swimming, Kirby can shoot a jet of bubbles at an enemy. If there is no other option, Kirby can inflate himself up with air and hit an enemy with a gust of wind.If Kirby finds that he has to get across a great gap, he can inflate himself with air and fly across. But while flying, Kirby can't inhale enemies like when he's running.
Islands
The game has seven islands. Each island consists of 3 to 7 levels, several mini-bosses, and a main boss. The islands are:
- Grass Land (Boss- Whispy Woods)
- Big Forest (Boss- Nruff and Nelly)
- Ripple Field (Boss- Sweet Stuff)
- Ice Berg (Boss- Ice Dragon)
- Red Canyon (Boss- Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright)
- Cloudy Park (Boss- Kracko)
- Dark Castle (Boss- King Dedede)
Friends
New to Kirby's Dream Land 2 are Kirby's three friends. Through the game, Kirby can ride Rick the hamster, Coo the owl, and Kine the fish.Riding on friends has it's advantages and disadvantages. With Rick, the player can run faster on land and maintain traction on slippery surfaces, but Rick can't fly or swim very well. Coo can fly fast (and against wind), but can't swim well either. Kine can't fly or run very fast, but he can swim fast and against currents under water, and allows Kirby to inhale underwater.
Whenever Kirby teams up with his friends, he can use special abilities in new ways. For example, when Kirby gains a parasol while riding Rick, the hamster will spin and balance the umbrella and Kirby on its nose.
In short cut-scenes before entering new worlds, the player learns how Kirby meets his new friends. In the cut-scene before World 7, Kirby decides to ride Rick over Coo or Kine. We see here that Kine becomes jealous of Rick because he is Kirby's favorite.
Special abilities
Kirby can inhale and swallow certain enemies so that he can gain their abilities. If Kirby is with a friend while he has an ability, he uses it in a different way.
- Parasol
- *Kirby- Kirby's main use of his parasol is to attack enemies in front of him. He can also use it to slow his fall and shield himself from enemies over him. It works much like it did in Kirby's Adventure, except Kirby can hold out the parasol as long as he wants.
- *Rick- Rick balances Kirby (who is in a ball form) on top of a parasol to attack enemies. This should only be used against flying enemies, and others that are high up.
- *Coo- Coo and Kirby spin around in a twister, damaging enemies who touch them. Similar to the Tornado power from Kirby's Adventure, Coo and Kirby are invulnerable until they stop spinning.
- *Kine- The parasol sticks out of Kine's mouth, a little like Kirby's attack.
- Fire
- *Kirby- Kirby dashes forward a few feet while engulfed in flame. Identical to the Fireball power from Kirby's Adventure.
- *Rick- Rick spits fireballs out of his mouth (with a short range). Almost identical to the Fire power from Kirby's Adventure.
- *Coo- Kirby and Coo both become engulfed in flame and dive-bomb forward and down.
- *Kine- Kine shoots a single fire ball (with a long range) out his mouth.
- Cutter
- *Kirby- Kirby throws a boomerang-like blade at his enemies.
- *Rick- Rick throws Kirby as a giant boomerang. (If an enemy touches Rick, they don't get hurt and drop the power until Kirby returns to Rick.
- *Coo- Coo throws three spinning feathers, one straight forward, and two at 45-degree angles. (they do not return).
- *Kine- Kine shoots a sonic blast at his enemies.
- Needle
- *Kirby- Kirby stands still and spikes jut out from his body, just as this power did in Kirby's Adventure.
- *Rick- Rick grows spikes on his back like a porcupine.
- *Coo- Kirby grows spikes down-wards to attack enemies under him.
- *Kine- Kine stands still and is covered in spikes (much like Kirby).
- Spark
- *Kirby- Kirby stands still and sparks fly from him. It works exactly like it did in Kirby's Adventure.
- *Rick- Rick and Kirby become electrified and shoot a turning beam of electricity, just like the Beam power from Kirby's Adventure.
- *Coo- Kirby flashes and rapidly shoots lightning at the ground.
- *Kine- A light bulb pops out of Kine's mouth. If you hold B, it can be used as a ramming weapon, and will light up dark rooms to reveal hidden doors. Releasing B launches the light bulb as an explosive projectile.
- Stone
- *Kirby- Kirby becomes a stone and becomes invincible. He is unable to move unless he is on an uneven surface.
- *Rick- Rick becomes a round boulder and Kirby can run on top of him to make him move.
- *Coo- Kirby becomes a stone and they drop from the sky.
- *Kine- Kirby (inside of Kine) becomes a stone and they drop to the bottom of the water
- Ice
- *Kirby- Kirby breathes an icy breath and freezes enemies. The enemy becomes an ice cube that Kirby can throw at enemies.
- *Rick- Rick and Kirby create a shield of freezing energy around themselves.
- *Coo- Kirby spits icy breath in a similar manner to the normal Ice power, but he can be aimed in a 180-degree arc by pressing Left or Right while holding B.
- *Kine- An ice shield surrounds Kine and Kirby, similar to the Rick-Ice combination, but Kine can still move while the shield is up. If you use it for too long, Kine will freeze into a block of ice for a moment.
