The Klippan Sofa is a popular model of sofa manufactured and sold by IKEA. Klippan means "the Rock" in Swedish. It was first sold in 1980 and continues to be one of IKEA's most popular and longstanding products. It comes in a standard two-seat size (which fits easily through standard house doorways), and can be fitted with a range of covers allowing the owner to express their own creative urges through the medium of fabric. Removable and interchangeable covers also mean owners need worry little about accidental damage. As well as standard cotton covers, IKEA sells 'exclusive' collections of covers, retiring designs after a year.
Design Problems
Slippage of the Klippan sofa cover is a common problem that detracts from the sofas clean and simple styling. Slippage causes the seat area to become loose and baggy and owners often have to poke their hands into the gaps to push the cover back into place. The problem can be solved in a number of ways, the most aggressive being to cut open the underside of the sofa and attach the strings on the end of the IKEA covers to the frame, preventing the cover slipping but still allowing covers to be changed. A more elegant solution is to feed a broom handle into the stringed section of the cover, where it is pushed hard into the depths of the sofa where it catches behind a section of the frame and holds the cover securely in place.
