Knobs region

Encyclopedia : K : KN : KNO : Knobs region

The Knobs is a narrow, horseshoe shaped region consisting of many small, "zig zag" shaped ridges that separates the Bluegrass region and Pennyroyal region of Kentucky. The region actually begins in Clark County, Indiana near Bald Knob, then crosses the Ohio river near Muldraugh, Kentucky and continues Southeastward through Larue, Marion, Taylor, Casey, and Lincoln counties before turning Northeast and merging with the Pottsville Escarpment and the Appalachian Plateau. While stretching for over 100 miles, the region is never more than 30 miles across.

The knobs are so named because along the ridges lines are large, circular bulges around 10'-30' higher in elevation than the rest of the ridge.

The appearance of the region varies along its length, with narrow, v shaped ridges south of the Louisville area to flat, wide ridges farther southeast. In Casey County and Lincoln County, the ridge tops are wide and flat enough that they are used for farming.
