Kobali

The Kobali are an alien race in the television series. They first appeared in the sixth season episode "Ashes to Ashes."

Background

The Kobali are a race from the Delta Quadrant. They reproduce by recovering the dead from other races, reanimating them and infusing them with Kobalia DNA. These new Kobali are than assimilated into Kobali society, and are even given a family, while usually losing all memory of their previous lives. They are forbidden to make contact with members of their former race.

The Kobali in Star Trek: Voyager

Ensign Lyndsay Ballard was a member of the Voyager crew who died during a misson. Her body was set adrift in space following a memorial service. The Kobali subsequently recovered her body and integrated her into their culture. However, Ballard remembered most of her old life, and expressed interest in returning to Voyager. This request was refused, and she was given a new Kobali family. Later on, once she had gained the trust of her new race she escaped in a shuttle craft and tracked down her old starship.

The crew initially did not believe Ballard's story. However, The Doctor's scans confirmed that she was in fact Lyndsay Ballard. While she tried to rejoin the crew and rekindle her friendship with Harry Kim, and The Doctor even attempted to restore her old human characteristics, she nevertheless began to feel more out of place as time went on. Eventually her Kobali father tracked her down and threatened to attack Voyager if his daughter wasn't returned.

Ballard resisted her father's attempts at first. However, she soon realized that her place was with the Kobali. After bidding farewell to her former crewmates, she returned to her new home.
