Lo Nafsik Lashir - Kokhav Nolad (in the Hebrew Wikipedia: לא נפסיק לשיר - כוכב נולד) (mostly called simply Kokhav Nolad (Hebrew: כוכב נולד)) is an Israeli television musical talent contest. The program was broadcasted in the Israeli Channel 2 by the concessionaire Shidurey Keshet since 2003. The program achieved great success, and in 2003 the program was crowned by the audience as the program of the decade in Masakh HaZahav ceremony, in a special category of this ceremony in honor of the tenth anniversary of Channel 2, which started broadcasting in 1993.

Format

The format of "Kokhav Nolad" is similar to the British show Pop Idol and its many spinoffs, though it is indepently produced and not a licensed adaptation. The idea is that a group of aspiring singers in their late teens and early 20's compete in singing and are voted on by the audience. In every round whoever gets the lowest number of points leaves the program until one winner remains. "Kokhav Nolad" was preceded by another program called "Lo Nafsik Lashir", in which the competitors competed in their knowledge of Hebrew songs, not on the quality of their singing.

The first season

The first season of Kokhav Nolad was held from May to August 2003.

The structure of the program

The program was built from a number of preliminary episodes in which different auditions were held across Israel. Immediately after that, the head-to-head rounds started in which competed a boy and a girl in solos and who that gets more votes went to the semi-final. The semi-final was divided into two shows and in each of the shows they were usually 4-5 competitors. The three who won in the highest number of votes went to the final.

The final

The final of the first season was held at Nitzanim coast in front of 7,000 people in the audience and 1 million viewers at home. Ninet Tayeb won the first place with the song Yam SHel Dma'ot. Shiri Maymon with the song Don Kikhote came second, and Shay Gabso with the song Esh third. Almost 1.4 million votes were cast.

The second season

The second season of Kokhav Nolad was held from February to August 2004.

The structure of the program

The program was built a from number of preliminary episodes in which different auditions were held across Israel. Immediately after that, the head-to-head rounds started in which a boy and a girl competed in solos and whoever got more votes went to the semi-final. The semi-final was divided into two shows, and in each of the shows there were usually 4-5 competitors. The three who won the highest number of votes from the two shows went to the finale.

The judging

The judges in the second season were Riki Gal, Tsedi Tsarfati and Ronny Braun. In the third season Svika Pick replaced Ronny Braun.

The final

The final of the second season was broadcasted on 15.8.04 from the "music village" on the coast of Nitzanim in front of an audience of 7,500 people. Harel Moyal won the contest with 862,368 votes. Harel Ska'at got the second place with 806,292 votes, and Adi Cohen the third place won with 254,926 votes. Almost 2 million votes were cast during the final. Since Har'el Ska'at won first place in the first semi-final against Har'el Moyal, who took second, and since polls held in different sites indicated that Har'el Ska'at was expected to win, many people believed that indeed that would happen. Therefore, many were surprised when Har'el Ska'at did not win.

In an attempt to explain why Har'el Ska'at did not win first place, criticisms were disseminated about the voting in the final, starting with claims that production forged the results, and ending with claims that a number of people used software in order to send in multiple votes for their candidate, sometimes more than allowed according to the regulations of the program (250 votes per apparatus). The program's production staff denied all the claims. On Thursday, August 19, at 11:00, a small demonstration (of about 20 people only) of Har'el Ska'at's fans was held in front of the offices of Shidurey Keshet. The demonstrators demanded that Shidurey Keshet investigate the claims and re-check the results. Shidurey Keshet reported that the matter was investigated and that disruptions in the voting were not found.

The third season

The third season of Kokhav Nolad was held from March to August 2005.

The structure of the program

The program was built from a number of preliminary episodes in which different auditions were held across Israel. Immediately after that, three live broadcast shows started. In each show seven candidates competed, with one candidate leaving each show. After that began the head-to-head rounds in which three candidates competed in solos, and whoever got the highest number of votes went to the semi-final. The semi-final was divided into two shows, and in each there were three who competed. The three who won the highest number of votes went to the final.
