Komachi at Sekidera

Encyclopedia : K : KO : KOM : Komachi at Sekidera

Komachi at Sekidera (Japanese: Sekidera Komachi) is a Noh play by Zeami Motokiyo.

The play is a kazura or 'wig play' (the leading role is female but performed by a male actor in a wig). Its central character is a real life figure, the poetess Ono no Komachi, who was famed for her beauty.

The play depicts Komachi at the end of her life, when her beauty has faded and she is about to die. Its theme is the transcience of life, and the inevitability of death. However, it also depicts Komachi conversing with a young priest who reveres her work and implies that her poetry will make her immortal. Zeami ironically sets the action during the Tanabata festival, which celebrates two young lovers.
