Korean drama

Encyclopedia : K : KO : KOR : Korean drama

Korean drama refers to televised dramas, similar to Western soap operas, produced in the Korean language for Korean audiences. Many of these dramas have become popular throughout Asia, and have contributed to the general phenomenon of Korean wave. Most popular Korean dramas originate in South Korea, although some North Korean dramas have also become popular in Japan. Two of the most internationally popular Korean dramas are the South Korean shows Winter Sonata and Stairway to Heaven.

These shows typically involve conflicts involving marital relationships, money bargaining, and most often, in-laws (usually between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law).

A lot of Korean televisions have similarities such as comic programs, dramas, news, and many other genres as the Japanese television. The influences of Chinese and Japanese culture also made a great impect on Korean society. However, some popular Korean dramas like Dae Jang Geum was a good instance to introduce their traditional way of life.

A few Korean pop stars have been successful throughout Asia, for example Bae Yong Joon, Choi Ji Woo and Lee Young Ae.
