Korobeiniki
Encyclopedia : K : KO : KOR : Korobeiniki
"Korobeiniki" or "Korobeyniki" (Russian: ), also known as "The Peddlers", is a Russian song based on a poem with the same name written in 1861 by Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov and printed in the Sovremennik magazine in 1861. Korobeyniki were peddlers selling fabric, haberdashery, books etc. in pre-revolutionary Russia.
The song quickly acquired the status of a Russian folk song, and is known for its dance-friendly structure and ever-increasing tempo.
It was one of the three tunes featured in the Nintendo game Tetris and has become closely associated with it in American popular culture. It was also featured in the movies The Deer Hunter, Snatch (performed on the balalaika), The Man Who Knew Too Little, Enemy at the Gates and was covered by rock band Ozma (featured in Dance Dance Revolution) on their 2002 release The Doubble Donkey Disc. It is also the theme song for Borat on the American version of Da Ali G Show.
