Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana is the country's most important international air facility. It has the capability of receiving aircraft up to the size of the Boeing 747-400. The airport used to be the main base for Ghana Airways, now replaced by Ghana International Airlines.

Flights to international destinations are frequent with some European airlines offering dailiy service to Europe. International destinations include the following (not exhaustive):

  1. African Destinations: La Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, South Africa, Libya, Egypt, Ethiopia
  2. European Desinations: Italy, Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom
  3. Middle Eastern Destinations: United Arab Emirates, Lebanon
  4. Americas Destination: USA
Although no direct flight is offered to Asia, Emirates Airline offers inexpensive and fast service via Dubai.

The new depature and arrival terminals at KIA opened in 2004, and have given the airport a whole new look. Nevertheless, covered gangways to planes are still not in existance. To move from the gates (of which there are only two) to the airplanes, shuttle buses are provided.

In October 2003 Swiss International Airlines ceased operations to Accra.

In 2004, the airport served 806,365 passengers.

Interesting facts

In 1999, world champion boxer Ike Quartey, apparently not a popular figure at home, was received with rocks and bottles by his country people at this airport after losing the world welterweight championship against Oscar de la Hoya, in what was catalogued as a mini riot.

Airlines
