Kozelets' (Ukrainian: Козелець; Russian: ) is a historic city located in the Chernihiv Oblast in northern Ukraine. Located on the Oster River, it is the administrative center of the Kozeletsky Raion.
The current estimated population is 8,900 (as of 2005).
The city is famous for its Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin. Of the several industries in Kozelets', is a flax-processing plant, a food industry, a mixed-feed industry, and a veterinary technikum.
History
Koselet's was first mentioned in 1098 as a fortified town in the Kievan Rus'. In 1656 the town was granted the Magdeburg Law. Kozelets was a company town in the Pereiaslav regiment from 1648–1667, and a company town in the Kyiv regiment from 1667–1782. In 1708, the town became the administrative center of the Pereiaslav regiment. It was a county town in the Kiev vicegerency in 1782–1797, Little Russia gubernia in 1797–1802 and Chernigov guberniya in 1802–1917.Attractions
Notable monuments of Kozelets include:
- the cathedral, dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos, presumed to have been designed by Andrei Kvasov and constructed in the late Ukrainian Baroque style under supervision of Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi in 1752–1763;
- the church of St Michael the Archangel (1784);
- the Ascension church (1864-66);
- the regimental chancellery building, today functioning as the town hall, designed and built by Kvasov and Hryhorovych-Barsky in 1756–1760;
- Darahan's mansion.
